Back from hols, new project, the joys of iBurst

Well, I’m back at work after a week and a bit off. So now I get around to blogging, as opposed to in my free time :)

I’m also straight back into it – not sure what I’m allowed to discuss yet (I’m not sure why, there have been all sorts of “don’t discuss this” discussions for no reason I can see – it’s not like this project is top secret or anything).

Anyway, I’m working as a technical architect on the initial phase of a revamp of a big big web project – surprisingly, I’m finding it pretty interesting – after the chaos of the last project, I just wanted to hide in a corner and build software; but having been thrown into this, the technical challenges (and the surprisingly high technical competency of the client) are making it look rather more appealing.

I must mention I hate the “architect” word – in a sane world I could bill myself as “high level software developer / designer” and still get respect – but the perversity of the industry (at least here in the antipodes) is such that mere developers (who spend all their time working with code) are obviously not the people who design code, especially not at the high level – no, you need ex developers who have stopped all coding, and are slowly letting their skills atrophy, to do the design. Bleah.

I just need to say, I love iBurst. This sort of project start-up would be insane – I have no PC yet, let alone net access – but thanks to my I.S.P.external link supplied iBurst card, I have broadband uncapped net access from the client site. So I can google search terms, I can read technology related web sites, I can keep up to date with e-mail; I can even waste time blogging. And I don’t have to worry about violating anyone’s net policies, nor about having my every keystroke logged.

Getting it running under linux was a bit of a pain (mainly due to SuSE irregularities – I may have to jump ship to ubuntu next time I rebuild) but I have it working now thanks to the nice people on the ibdriver project, and it is nice and fast and reliable.
