It’s not perfect, but at least it’s a step in the right direction. A bill is to be introduced into South Australian parliament giving rights to “domestic partners”.

The interesting thing here is that it has been drafted in such a way as to get full cross-bench support. Support from Democrats or Greens is nothing unusual but Family First support may come as a surprise. We have to remember however that in SA Family First are more moderate than here in Vic and also look at the way the bill has been designed. It can apply to any two co-habiting adults (e.g. siblings) thereby giving even non-sexual co-habitations the same status as other households. This may well fit the delicate sensibilities of Family First – now we can pretend every domestic partnership is platonic till they tell us otherwise!
